King & Campbell have been working closely with the Port Macquarie Astronomical Association (PMAA) in the development of plans for a new observatory and science hub in Rotary Park, adjacent to Town Beach. In March 2020 Development Approval was granted by Port Macquarie Hastings Council for the new facility, which is to replace the existing observatory building in the same location. The existing building was opened in 1965 and has provided continuous educational services since that time, including astronomical viewing and exhibitions. The new building will provide larger and modern facilities, including a new observatory dome, a multi-function display and foyer, an 85 seat auditorium and an outdoor plaza. PMAA are keen to make a start on the new building and are currently seeking grant funding opportunities.
